Armed military men saved former Niger State Governor, Dr. Babangida Aliyu, from what would have been an embarrassing situation during Friday’s inauguration of the new governor, Alhaji Abubakar Bello.
The military men released several gun shots and tear gas  and ferried Aliyu out of Bako Kontagora Memorial Stadium venue of the inauguration when the crowd showed their displeasure with his appearance at the swearing in ceremony.
The ex-governor was booed and stoned by the angry crowd who called him several names.
Aliyu, whose convoy arrived the inauguration venue at about 10.15am, was booed on arrival by the crowd as he climbed the podium to take the salute of the military guard.
Shouts of “Barawo,”  “Thief,”  “Ole” “Change has come,”  “Your time is past, go,” filled the air at the stadium.
Sensing the tension, the organisers of the ceremony had to drop the ex-governor from making speech as earlier planned on the programme.
The outgoing Secretary to the State government, Seidu Ndako Kpaki, spoke on behalf of the government.
At about 11am when the new governor was taking his oath of office and oath of allegiance, Aliyu who sat beside his estranged deputy, Hon. Ahmed Musa Ibeto, for the first time in the public since the latter dumped the Peoples Democratic Party, was pelted with slippers and a sachet water, forcing his security details to form human shields round him.

Uduaghan Confirms Delta AG Absconding, Says It Was Done In Bad Faith

Emmanuel Uduaghan, Governor of Delta State and currently investigating the religious crisis
Outgoing Governor of Delta State, Emmanuel Uduaghan, has confirmed the disappearance of the State Accountant General (AG), Mr Cyril Chuma Agbele, six days to handover to a new administration.
SaharaReporters, on Tuesday, exclusively reported the disappearance of Mr. Agbele following alleged financial pressure from Uduaghan.
Confirming the AG disappearance Thursday, when Permanent Secretaries and retired Permanent Secretaries paid him a farewell visit at Government House, Uduaghan stated that the disappearance was done in bad faith towards him.
Uduaghan, who expressed surprise that after a fruitful discussion on arrangements for the inauguration of the new administration, including security and entertainment, the Accountant General made him incommunicado.
"The Accountant General has disappeared in the last five to six days. The truth is that on Thursday we met and I told him we have some payments to make in the areas of the swearing-in ceremony coming up tomorrow (today), he did not object, he did not say no and on Sunday, I was calling him but he was not picking my calls.
"And of course on Monday his phones have been put off and on Tuesday, he sent in a paper that he was sick. By Wednesday, he sent in a memo and I find this act very inconsistent and irresponsible,” the Governor stated.
"You know the security implication of this particularly when peace and security is a key agenda of my administration and I cannot compromise on it. It is a conspiracy to grind my administration to a halt and an attempt to set me up on a collision course with the incoming administration. I think is very irresponsible." Uduaghan lamented.
It was reliably learned that the disappearance of the AG was planned and executed by the Governor-elect, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, who is from the same Ika with the absconded AG.

But in a twist, the agency remained stationed at his residence in defiance to the court order, this prompted counsel to the embattled Senator-elect, Ajibola Oluyede, to accuse the NDLEA  of flouting the court order restraining them from arresting Kashamu.

Buhari Urged To Overhaul EFCC

The transition monitoring group has asked incoming-president, Muhammudu Buhari, to ensure a total overhaul of the anti-corruption agencies, especially the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
Buhari Urged To Overhaul EFCC
The President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari.
The group says doing this will restore Nigerians lost confidence in the agencies to prosecute and fight against corruption in the country.
According to Daily Trust, the group’s chairman, comrade Ibrahim Zikirullahi, said this while presenting the findings of the ‘TMG’s maiden governance survey’, on the expectations of Nigerians on the Buhari administration.
Speaking in Abuja today, the chairman said that the EFCC currently had little or no value in the evaluation of Nigerians and the society, hence the need for its leadership and operations to be completely overhauled.
He said: “All we see is that the more the money that is given to the EFCC, the more corruption we see in Nigeria. So, as far as we are concerned we are calling for the incoming administration to overhaul the EFCC. In fact from beginning to the end, there should be a serious cleaning of the EFCC, we need people with sound mind, people that are intelligent, people that are courageous, people with the will, people that are ready to put their lives on the line to do the needful to make sure that Nigeria is rid of corruption.

“These are the people that can change Nigeria to the promise land, because any system that encourages corruption is doom. So, what we have here today as EFCC is more or less political structure that government of the day determines that area to go. We want a new leadership in EFCC. Not only that, they (EFCC) must be put in front line charge, so that, issue of money will not be problem in tackling corruption in this country. But those that we are putting there must also be examined to know that they are not corrupt,”  Zikirullahi said.
Buhari himself has been critical of the EFCC operation under President Goodluck Jonathan. Ahead of the 2015 general elections, the president-elect called on Jonathan to call to order security agencies, who were straying from the proper cause according to the peace pact signed by both men.

Why Deeper Life Turned Down Jonathan’s Request to Visit Church During Campaign

Nigeria - Deeper Life Bible Church according to Daily Post denied President Goodluck Jonathan's request to worship at the church premises during the campaign time earlier this year.

PastorKumuyi_0

Jonathan was originally billed to visit Deeper Life on February 8 after leaving Redemption Camp, but he had to proceed to the Lord’s Chosen when he discovered the church was not ready to welcome him.

According to an highly placed official of the church, the "leadership of the ministry was very careful not to allow politics or politicians dent the image of the church or pastor Kumuyi. The presidency had invited him severally for meetings with the president, but he would wave it aside.

“When Abati wrote the church to inform them about Jonathan’s visit, precisely January 22, the church leaders deliberated upon it and decided to turn it down”.

Asked if Kumuyi was aware of the decision, the insider said, “of course, but he has no final say. Though he founded the church, he does not decide how such thing is being handled. He had to allow leaders of the church to handle it. And when it became obvious that they were not ready to welcome the president, Daddy Kumuyi had to accept their decision”.

It was gathered that the president had to leave Redemption Camp for Rev. Lazarus Mouka’s Lords Chosen in Ijesha when he discovered the church was not ready to welcome him.

GEJ-Goodluck-Ebele-Jonathan
Some soldiers deployed to protect President Goodluck Jonathan’s private residence in Otuoke, Bayelsa state, on Thursday harassed and detained a Punch reporter, Simon Utebor, for attempting to take pictures of the president’s house.
Mr. Utebor was arrested by soldiers from the Joint Task Force in the Niger Delta and handed over to the police at Otuoke Police Station.
Mr. Utebor was accosted by soldiers on guard duty while taking photographs of ongoing work on the palatial residence constructed while the president was in office.
Artisans were seen putting finishing touches to the premises consisting of multiple blocks of two storey buildings.
Mr. Jonathan is expected to be received on Friday by the Bayelsa Government at the Gabriel Okara Cultural Centre at 3p.m. and later in his Otuoke country home by his kinsmen.
When contacted the  spokesperson of the Joint Task Force, Isa Ado, a lieutenant colonel, confirmed the arrest and subsequent handing over of the Punch reporter to the police.
He said the JTF commander had already ordered the release of the journalist.

Female bank manager caught red handed by husband in bed with driver

The marriage of a female bank manager is on the verge of collapse after she was caught red handed by her husband and her driver in bed.

A female bank manager simply identified as Susan, with one of the new generation banks in the country was handed the disgrace of her life when she was reportedly caught having sex with her driver on her matrimonial bed by her husband.
According to reports, the sordid incident happened in Lugbe, a suburb of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, when the husband, a director with a ministry in the FCT, acting on a tip off after he was intimated of his wife's adulterous way of life, came back home suddenly to meet what turned out to be a nightmare for him.
According to the story, the woman, a pretty mother of three from Enugu State, who also ran a beauty palour in Wuse, was in the habit of sleeping with younger men both in hotels and even in her matrimonial home and when information got to her husband who is said to be in his 60s, he did not believe at first but when his friends started making mockery of him, he decided to begin monitoring his wife which paid off.
A source who was part of the spy team narrated:
"On the day of the discovery, the man had 'gone' work, unknown to his wife that he was lurking around the corner waiting to see if what he heard all along was true.
He did not have long to wait as shortly after 11 am, he noticed the wife's car drive into their house with her official driver, who was also suspected to be her lover.
After waiting for some moments, the man sneaked into his compound and with his keys, used the back door to gain access to the house and lo and behold, his beloved wife was being ravaged on their matrimonial bed.
The shocked man did the unthinkable by pulling out a gun on the adulterous pair and ordered them out naked.
He could have paraded them in the street naked if not for neighbours who begged on their behalf.
As we speak, the man has sent the wife parking and is set to conduct a DNA test on the three children to ascertain if they are actually his."

No ex-govt official should leave Nigeria after May 29 – Yayale

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mahmud Yayale Ahmed

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation,  Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, has charged the incoming administration not to let anyone leave the country after May 29 with a case to answer.

Yayale, who is the pro-chancellor and chairman of council of the Bayero University, Kano (BUK) gave the advice after presenting a paper at the 31st convocation lecture of the university yesterday.

His paper was titled; “The 2015 Transition: Realities, Expectations and the Challenges”.

He said when the Buhari administration takes over, it would discover many things and ask many questions.

“I want to inform you that whether there is proper briefing or not, the reality will become reality on May 29. After they have taken over they will see where to ask questions and in what we call public accountability, nobody should be allowed to go without accounting for what is not there.” Yayale said.

Yayale said Nigerians should not expect miracles from Buhari, but rather support him with prayers as the circumstances are not such that would admit miracles.

He said he never regretted contesting for governorship in Bauchi State because he had learnt a lot and is ready to contest again whenever the need arises.

The major problem of the Nigerian economy, Yayale said, is not about its size, but its content.  “The country is increasingly becoming mired in debts. After painfully exiting the Paris Club and other external debts, with a cash payment of over $12 billion, the foreign debts are piling up again from $4.5 billion in 2010 to $6.4 billion in 2014.

“The domestic debt profile increased from $30.5 billion in 2010 to $47 billion in 2014. On the whole public debt has grown by $18 billion between 2010 and 2014. A major problem of this debt profile is that most of the debt is incurred on consumption (recurrent) and not investment (capital)”.

Yayale during the lecture tried to defend himself on the role he played when late president Yar’adua was on the sick bed, saying  Yar’ adua would forgive him for taking the right decision.

FUEL CRISIS: Airports, TV Stations, And Hospitals Shut Down As Economy Slides Toward Recession

Fuel Crisis Threatens To Force Nigeria Into A Recession
The nation’s commercial activities are being crippled by the continued fuel scarcity crisis, threatening to drive Nigeria into a recession.
Thousands of air travellers have been left stranded at airports across the country as domestic air carriers close operations because they lack fuel. Many of the passengers who arrived at the Abuja airport were met with officials informing them that their flight was cancelled, or that the sale of tickets was suspended.
Both Arik Air and Aero Contractors grounded all their planes because they could not obtain JetA1 fuel, the fuel needed for commercial jets to fly. Virgin Atlantic was also forced to buy its fuel in Accra, Ghana according to reports.
Mr. Simon Tumba, spokesman for Aero Contractors, told the media that, “Due to the general scarcity of aviation fuel (JetA1) in the country, the airline (Aero) will not be able to operate over 80 per cent of her domestic flights as scheduled.”
The shortage of diesel fuel has even shut down radio and television stations. BEAT FM Lagos and CITY FM announced that their 24 hour operations would be halted as a result of the diesel gasoline shortage. Many television stations announced they have been forced to take similar precautions and have yanked many programs from the television line up.
The fuel crisis has grown so potent that it may force MTN and Airtel to close down some of their services because of the amount of fuel needed for base stations throughout the country. The official MTN Twitter account for Nigeria told the public yesterday that, "If diesel supplies are not received within the next 24 hours the network will be seriously degraded and customers will feel the impact."
Telecommunications companies have experienced a decline in calling and data plan subscriptions, which has been directly tied to the price of fuel, conserving mobile battery life, and generator use.
Hospitals have been struggling to cope with the price of diesel to power their generators, resulting in many patients asked to leave in order to save resources for patients with critical conditions.
As filling stations sell fuel at prices far beyond the reach of the common man, for 250-400 naira per liter in the formal market, or 450-500 naira on black markets; the Nigerian government and authorities have turned their backs on the crisis.
To make matters worse, the power supply dropped by nearly 1,000 megawatts last week, meaning that the country currently generates around 2,500 megawatts of power.
To make the situation worse the crisis was compounded by the epileptic power supply as a result of drop in generated power by 1,000 megawatts in the last one week. The National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) and Shiroro Power Plant will this week shut down its operation following of a system collapse at the Hydro-Electric Power Plant in Niger State, according to reports.
Many Nigerians have in the last one-week decried the poor supply of electricity and criticized the power firms for not living up to expectations.
The dwindling economic situation in Nigeria has led to mop up of money in circulation, reducing people’s purchasing power in an economy over-reliant on imported goods.

Jonathan Mismanaged Nigeria–Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo fired a fresh salvo the way of President Goodluck Jonathan, on Sunday, when he looked back at the last eight years and returned with a verdict: The country had been poorly managed under Jonathan. Obasanjo said this when the Iyalode of Yoruba land, Chief Alaba Lawson, led a delegation of South-West women leaders on a visit to his Hilltop residence in Abeokuta.

The 78-year-old leader said owing to the mismanagement of the country in the last eight years, the incoming administration of the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, should be prepared to face the daunting challenges that lay ahead.

He said, “The country had been poorly managed in the last eight years and it would take some time for Buhari’s government to correct the anomalies. But I want to tell him not to be frightened.”

Calling on Nigerians to exercise patience with the incoming administration, Obasanjo said the damage that had been done to the country in the last eight years could not be corrected overnight.

“What I would say is that we should all put our minds at rest. He (Buhari) is someone that will perform but we must exercise patience because what has been destroyed for eight years cannot be undone overnight.

“But like the Chinese proverb which says the journey of a thousand miles starts with a step, it is not only the first step (that matters) but the first step in the right direction because if you take a wrong step, you’re not likely to get to the destination,” he said.

The Owu-born leader recalled that when he assumed power as civilian president in 1999, the country was in the same situation it is today – battling fuel crisis and lack of power supply.

“When I came in 1999, there was no fuel and power. The situation was like this and I thought we have put that one behind us,” he stressed, even as he expressed confidence in the ability of Buhari to surmount the hurdle.

“The man that is coming on board has a lot of experience in terms of governance. He is not a novice in governance having ruled the country as a military Head of State from 1983 to 1985.

“Nigerians need to exercise patience because what has been destroyed in eight years cannot be rebuilt in a day,” Obasanjo maintained.

Recalling his years as military Head of State between 1976 and 1979, Obasanjo said he worked closely with Buhari and that their association produced results.

Urging Nigerians to pray for Buhari, Obasanjo said the president-elect needs the cooperation of Nigerians in order to put the country on the right footing.

“Let’s give him time. Let’s pray for him and let’s cooperate with him. We are all concerned about the present situation of Nigeria. The expectation is very high but at the same time, there is a lot of goodwill internally and externally for the incoming government.

“Once the incoming administration realises this and takes every step, particularly in the first three months when people will be watching and counting, I think for me, we will get there,” the former Peoples Democratic Party leader said.

The former Chairman, PDP Board of Trustees, however, warned Buhari not to take Nigerians for granted as he called on him to always be honest in his dealing with Nigerians.

Obasanjo added that with Buhari at the helm of affairs, Nigeria would have a new opportunity.

He said, “God has provided a new opportunity for Nigeria and Nigerians and I believe God does not make mistakes. There are two things I believe the incoming President appreciates; one is that he knows that the expectations of Nigerians are high and two, that he should not be frightened by the situation on the ground.”

Also, Obasanjo urged the incoming administration against squandering its goodwill at home and abroad.

Decrying the agony inflicted upon Nigerians by the scarcity of fuel across the country, Lawson advised Obasanjo to continue to support the Buhari government in advisory capacity.

She said, “We are aware that you also took over the reins of power of this country at a critical time and with the help of the Almighty God, you were able to bring us back from the brink. The same goes for now.

“We, therefore, appeal to you not to leave this incoming government. Though we are confident of the time-proven abilities of our incoming President, Muhammadu Buhari, we also believe that two heads are better than one and where there is a gathering of wise ones, wisdom will issue forth from there.”

Inauguration: Nigerian students warn SA President Jacob Zuma to stay away from Nigeria

Tuesday, May 26, 2015

Nigerian students under the aegis of the National Association of Nigerian Students has warned South African President, Jacob Zuma, not to come to Nigeria for the inauguration of President-elect Buhari following what they described as his poor handling of the xenophobic attacks on some Africans including Nigerians in his country in April.

According to the student body, the failure of the South African President to apologize to Nigerians after the attacks is distasteful. The students expressed their anger in a statement signed by its President, Tijani Usman.

The statement in part reads
“We wish to advise the South African President (Jacob Zuma) to rather stay at home and address burning issues, rather than embarking on a visit that is the least desirable. The South African President’s failure to apologise to Nigeria for the losses the country and our citizens incurred during the xenophobic attacks on foreigners leaves a bitter taste in the mouth. There is therefore, no point felicitating with a people who clearly do not matter much to you. President Zuma’s visit will only amount to pretence.”

Gov. Amaechi speaks on his fight with Patience Jonathan and GEJ

Rivers state governor, Rotimi Amaechi says despite the effort by First Lady Patience Jonathan and the president to remove him from office, they are all leaving government at the same time. He said the president and his wife had wanted him to leave office before the end of his tenure but he is now seeing the end of his administration.

While speaking at the presentation of a special documentary titled 'The Amaechi Years', the governor said Patience Jonathan interfered with operations of the military apparatus in the state, ordering the transfer of military officers in the state just because they greeted him.

"People have asked me why I opposed President Goodluck Jonathan. When the fight started, instead of receiving money from the Federal government, we were sending money to the Federal Government. Have you seen a country where the Commissioner of Police reports to the wife of the President? That is happening in Rivers State. Have you seen a country where a Brigade Commander reports to the wife of the President or where the Navy Commander or Air force Commander reports to the wife of the President? This happened in Rivers State. The wife of the President will come, they will go and wait for her at the airport. She will tell them to come there at 9.00am, she will come by 12noon. They will escort her to her house, she will go upstairs and come down by 9.00pm and they will all be on ground waiting for her. She will say, I heard you greeted Amaechi last week. Why did you greet him? I will transfer you and you are transferred.
The more she did that, the more the President turned his back, and the more I fought because I felt that such a system is not a system that will make Nigeria grow. Why I agree with my friends who says forget the past because it is gone, I think it is a lesson. Governance is about the man that has been elected and he has the responsibility to deliver services to the people. There was a time when it was everywhere that the Supreme Court will remove Amaechi. That was on until we defeated them at the Supreme Court. I told the Rivers people to go about their business because I have finished praying and that President Jonathan cannot remove me. We are leaving at the same time. They didn’t want me to stay to the end, but here I am staying till the end.”he said

Jonathan deprived EFCC of funds –Lamorde

Jonathan deprived EFCC of funds –Lamorde

Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde, yesterday indicted the outgoing Jonathan administration, blaming it over the poor performance of the agency.
Speaking through the commission’s spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, the EFCC boss, blamed its inability to tackle corruption on inadequate funding from the outgoing government.

According to Uwujaren, “we are happy that the incoming government is making the fight against corruption one of its cardinal objectives. Every Nigerian is happy about that. EFCC has been doing this for more than 11 years. We are proud of what the incoming administration wants to do.
“We need an administration that will look at what we are doing and empower us sufficiently to enable us make more impact than we have ever done in the past. We welcome the focus and we believe Nigeria needs to tackle this fight more rigorously for us to make the needed impact.”
Uwujaren proudly listed series of achievements recorded by the agency in over 10 years of its existence, claiming significant progress had been made in the prosecution of former governors.

He said assets that belonged to some of ex-governors had been seized, while money running into billions of dollars had been recovered on behalf of the Nigerian government.
“It is important to recall some of the milestones achieved by the commission in the investigation, prosecution and recovery of assets of politically exposed persons, including ex-governors,” Uwujaren noted.

He denied rumours that the EFCC was involved in corruption in regards to seized assets and frozen accounts of suspects.

PDP Appoints Acting BOT Chairman

Former minister of Defence, Haliru Mohammed has been named the new acting chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees.
PDP Appoints Acting BOT Chairman
Haliru Mohammed was the director of president Jonathan’s campaign
The endorsement of Haliru Mohammed, according to Premium Times, took place at a meeting at the Aso Rock presidential villa, in Abuja on Monday night, May 25.

The crisis rocking the party following its abysmal outing in the 2015 general election resulted in former Chairman of the BOT, Tony Anenih, resigning.
Earlier, the party’s national chairman, Adamu Mu’azu, stepped down after weeks of running battles with party chieftains who faulted him for the party’s poor outing at the polls.
Mr. Mohammed was once the national chairman of the party. He was also appointed by President Jonathan to oversee his declaration for re-election.

Haliru Mohammed’s endorsement may come as a surprise to many who thought the position was reserved for President Jonathan as suggested by Tony Anenih in his letter of resignation.

Addressing newsmen on Monday in Abuja, the Head of Media and Publicity of the Commission, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said the ten suspects (Ex-governors) will be brought before the anti-graft agency to account for the huge sum of money said to have stolen.
Mr. Uwujaren however revealed that case of corrupt enrichment against Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State has been temporarily suspended following his election as the governor of the state in line with the immunity clause in the Constitution of Nigeria.
The commission noted that apart from seizing the assets of the most of the suspects, it has also frozen the accounts of companies linked to the former governors. It added that the sum of N65 billion has so far recovered from the suspects.
Former governor of Borno State, Ali Modu Sheriff has been cautioned by the Law enforcement agency.
According to the commission, Ali Sheriff might be declared wanted if he fails to honour its invitation to answer some questions bordering on a petition against him.
The commission added that the sum of $245 million, £693,000 and €62,000 has also been recovered from the corrupt individuals and organisations between 2012 and 2014.
After years of devastating effects from corruption, Nigeria (Africa’s most populous country) has become a wasteland. It’s not a coincidence that Nigeria is now a centre for different kinds of corruption parasites.

Buhari Hands Out Shocker To Governors, Says They Won't Nominate Ministers

Nigeria’s President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, says no minister will be picked by governors for the incoming administration.

General Buhari dropped the hint at the weekend in Abuja.

He insisted that he will chose his ministers by himself from the six geo-political zones, irrespective of political party and without consulting the Governors.

This is a clear departure from the tradition of the Peoples Democratic Party, where governors are asked to nominate ministerial appointees.

‘Promised To Tackle Corruption’

The incoming president, who will be inaugurated on Friday, also gave an indication that he may not continue subsidy in the petroleum sector.

General Buhari also promised to tackle corruption and block the loopholes in the oil and gas sector as soon as possible.

He had earlier said his Cabinet would be made up of people with requisite experience and committed technocrats.

The President-elect said his choice of Cabinet members would stimulate the incoming administration towards delivering good governance that would meet the aspirations of Nigerians.

He also said his administration would give priority to education, employment creation and security, stressing that unemployment was the biggest threat to Nigeria.

Theophilus Danjuma asks Buhari to probe Pres Jonathan for the sake of national interest.

General Theophilus Danjuma (rtd), yesterday advised President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, to investigate President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration over the $60 billion debt the new administration will inherit.

Former Defense Minister Danjuma made the call in Takum, Taraba State days after the Vice President-elect, Professor Yemi Osinbajo raised concerns about the huge debt President Jonathan was leaving behind for to Buhari’s government to inherit.

Commenting on Saturday, Danjuma lamented that the outgoing administration had nothing to show for incurring the debt it has and emphasized that a probe was needed to find out how President Jonathan's Govt accrued this debt.
He said: “It is disheartening to know that the incoming government of Buhari will have to contend with a debt of over $60billion and there is nothing to show for this huge debt. Well, we would know what happened to these monies, because I believe that the Buhari administration has to, and should, in national interest, investigate the administration so that we would know what happened.”
The former minister said he chose to steer clear of politics because
“all the political parties are the same [and] very bad.” adding that “I rather steer clear of it. I support anyone who comes to me for money based on what I make of their person irrespective of political affiliations,” he said.

Policemen demand N65,000 to rescue kidnap victim

Rev. Louis Nebo
The family of an Anglican Church cleric, Rev. Louis Nebo, says policemen attached to the Anti-Kidnapping Squad of the Enugu State Police Command demanded N65,000 to rescue the man of God from the kidnappers’ den.
It was learnt that N15,000 of the sum had allegedly been paid to the operatives before the kidnappers contacted the family, demanding N10m ransom.
Louis, 57, was reportedly kidnapped by some masked gunmen around Umumba Ndi Uno in the Ezeagu Local Government Area of the state last Saturday.
The pastor, who lives in Aguobu Umumba, was said to be returning from a meeting at a neighbouring community around 5.30am on the fateful day when his captors ambushed him.

Speaking with PUNCH Metro on Wednesday, the victim’s son, Ebube Nebo, said there was no progress on the rescue of his father since the abduction was reported to the police. He added that the family was devastated by the cops’ request.
He said, “He was coming from his hometown in Obinofia Ndi Uno with my mother and her friend when he was kidnapped. They had gone for a community meeting. We reported the incident to the police.
“They initially requested N20,000 for mobilisation, but we paid N15,000. They told us that they would go on a rescue mission and left in our presence. When there was no success, we went back to them. They are now demanding N50,000 to track the phone number of the kidnappers, who had called us to demand N10m ransom. We do not have the money.
“They (kidnappers) even allowed him to speak with us on the phone and he said he was inside a thick bush. Just last month, he paid N500,000 ransom for the release of one of his junior pastors who was kidnapped.”
Ebube’s mother, Mrs. Charity Nebo, said her husband had made a U-Turn on sighting three gunmen from afar, but his escape mission was stalled by other members of the gang, who surfaced from the bush and warned him not to move.
She said, “There were three men standing on the road. They wore masks and were armed with guns. We decided to turn back. As we made a U-turn, we saw other members of the gang pointing guns at us. They chased us out of the car, collected the car key and our phones. They escaped through the bush with the my husband.”
Charity implored the captors to release her husband, adding that the family did not have money to pay the ransom.
She said, “I believe in God that we are worshiping. He will protect and safe him. Personally, I don’t have any money. The kidnappers should be merciful and release him unconditionally.”
A relative of the reverend, Mr. Madoka Okoli, also said the policemen collected N15,000. He added that the family was not ready to make any further payment and urged the police authorities to arrest the kidnappers.
He said, “The policemen promised to comb the bush after collecting the money, but there was no progress. They are supposed to do their job based on the information we have provided, but it is quite unfortunate that they are still demanding N50,000 from a family that is already traumatised.”
The Enugu State police Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the abduction.
He said the command had not relented in its effort to free the pastor and round up the kidnappers. Amaraizu urged the family not to pay money to any security operative, noting that the police should be provided with information that could assist in tracking the captors.
He said, “I am aware that frantic efforts are in place to get out the victim unhurt and alive and the efforts did not include payment of any money to security operatives under any guise. However, effort should be made to enable us to know those behind this act.”

How I Will Choose My Ministers - Buhari

Buhari: How I will choose my ministers...

President-elect Muhammadu Buhari addresses a group at his Daura home, where he received various guests during the week.
President-elect Muhammadu Buhari has dismissed the ministerial lists in circulation on the social media as fake because his ministers will not emerge the way the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) picked members of its Federal Executive Council (FEC) in the last 16 years.
Buhari made this known in an exclusive interview he granted senior editors of Daily Trust at his country home in Daura, Katsina State on Tuesday.
As the May 29 handover date draws closer, there have been speculations about those who would make the next government’s ministerial list. Most of the persons who featured on the speculative list were picked from across the 36 states and the six geopolitical zones, to rhyme with the PDP’s tradition of appointing a minimum of one minister from each state of the federation and six others from the geopolitical zones.
In the interview, Buhari dismissed the speculations, by stating that “I am not speaking about it; I have not put anything on paper, so nobody has seen it and I haven’t discussed it with anybody; I am just keeping it close to my chest.”
The exclusive interview was conducted in-between a series of emotional activities in which the president-elect met with his primary and secondary school mates and other personal friends to exchange banters because, as he put it, as from May 29, he would be too busy with the affairs of Nigeria, hence it would be difficult to find time to socialise with his cherished friends from his childhood.
Providing an insight into how his ministers would emerge, Buhari said, “I am ardent listener of Hausa Service of Voice of America (VOA) and the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) from 6am to 7am every morning. I am going to quote myself because I heard in one of the interviews that I said the type of people I am supposed to appoint, like in the cabinet and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and service chiefs, will be different. Definitely my approach is going to be different from what we had under the PDP where governors nominated ministers.”
The president-elect said if state governors are at liberty to appoint their commissioners, he, too, should be at liberty to choose those who would serve with him in the Federal Executive Council.
According to Buhari, he was still looking around for the kind of persons who could help to transform the country, stating that, “I have been around long enough to know people that I can approach for things like that… Deliberately we will look for competent people, dedicated and experienced to head ministries and, of course, there will be schedules for ministers and we will expect them to fill them. Economically we will try and stop a lot of wastages and encourage austerity so that we can fund the ministries. Education and healthcare will get more attention. Of course, security is Number One. Certainly, there is a lot to do but we are hoping that we ‘ll get good people to be in charge of ministries who can apply themselves to their responsibilities so that in no time Nigerians would begin to see the difference.”
When asked if he would present the list of his ministers to the Senate in the first week of the proclamation of the new legislature, Buhari simply responded “I will not make that known before you.”
He spoke extensively on why he is insisting that the principle of separation of powers among the three arms of government should be obeyed; the power sharing in the All Progressives Congress (APC); fuel subsidy; the lack of progress made in the handover from President Goodluck Jonathan to him, and much more.

MUSLIMS around the world celebrate terrorist attack killing 12 in Paris

Members of the pro-ISIS forum Jihadi Media Platform (alplatformmedia.com) lashed out at France. A member called Al-Dia’ Al-Gharib wrote:

“France was [once] part of the land of Islam and will return to be the land of Islam, in spite the worshippers of the Cross.”

Another, who goes by the name Muhib Al-Salihin, wrote:

“France is one of the harshest enemies of Islam and of the Islamic State in particular.”

Forum member Abu Al-Qassem Al-Shawqi commented:

“[This] is news that quenches the thirst for revenge. By Allah, beloved ones, let us not think lightly of prayers. By Allah, they [the attackers] are soldiers of Allah.”

And a member calling himself Abu Bakr Al-Zari’ni remarked:

“Congratulations to France and to its people for reaping what their hands sowed. Did these evil cartoonists think that we were a nation that would remain silent in face of those who insult our Prophet…? Did [French President] Hollande and the governments that preceded him think that their interventions and despotism in the lands of the Muslims would not be met with retribution? No, by Allah, from now on the youths of Islam will no longer remain silent, especially since we have a state [ISIS] to mobilize armies if anybody insults the nation of Islam.”

Arabic-speaking jihad supporters also celebrated the attack on Twitter, some using the Arabic hashtag “Paris Is Burning.” Many of them shared videos from the scene of the attack, calling the shooters “heroes” and praising them for avenging the honor of the Prophet and of Islam.

One, who calls himself Najam (@35njm), wrote:

“#Paris Is Burning. Oh Allah slaughter them, Allah attack them. This newspaper insulted the Messenger of Allah and Islam.”

ISIS supporter Hamel Al-Liwa’ (@blue964) tweeted:

“Fear prevails among the newspapers and journalists who hate Islam. There are demands for military protection of the paper headquarters. #Paris is turning into a military barracks.”

Another ISIS supporter, Al-Khilafa Hiya Al-Hal [“the Caliphate is the solution”] (@death4x), shared a video of the attack and commented:

“France turned the lands of the Muslims into battlefields, and now the Muslims have turned Paris into a battlefield. Allah akbar.”

The following are some reactions by French-speaking jihadists on Twitter. ISIS supporter Abou Hafs (@Ansar_Al_Ouma) tweeted:

“Oh Allah, the honor of your prophet has been cleansed.”

Another, Al Furat Wadijlah (@AlFuratWadijlah), commented on the character of the attack:

“An RPG7 with Kalashnikovs, it’s a well prepared assault.” “That dog Charb [Charlie Hebdo editor-in-chief and cartoonist Stéphane Charbonnier, who is one of those killed in the attack] was supposed to publish this drawing on the first page this week:”  “Still no terror attacks in France.” The jihadist comments: “Wait! We have until the end of January to give [you] our [new year’s] greetings.”
